From Siberia With Health

Hawthorn liqueur is not just a delicious, fragrant and pleasant-colored drink, but also a great folk remedy for the treatment and prevention of many diseases. In moderation, experts recommend using it for migraines, exhaustion of the central nervous system, increased cholesterol in the blood and other ailments.

Most often, amateur winemakers use in the preparation of liqueur not only the hawthorn berries themselves, but also flowers with leaves. As a result, whatever recipe the winemaker uses, he will receive a high-quality and pleasant-tasting alcoholic drink at the end. Which recipe the home master chooses will depend on their personal preferences.

Classic liqueur recipe.

Most winemakers follow the classical, traditional Siberian technology of making hawthorn liqueur, which involves the use of the following ingredients:

  • Dry hawthorn fruits "Siberian Green" – 1 oz.
  • Alcohol – 100 ml.
  • Granulated sugar – 10 oz.

Hawthorn from Siberia is a shrub with white flowers and small red or black berries. Both components can be used for medicinal purposes, however, berries are still used more often than inflorescences. The plant contains many compounds that provide tremendous benefits for the heart. At the same time, blood pressure is also affected to normalize it.

Among the useful components of hawthorn we can find:

  1. Hyperoside, stimulating the work of the myocardium. It provides an increase in the volume of blood output.
  2. Organic acids, which are charged with stimulating blood flow and reducing inflammatory processes in the vessels.
  3. Polyphenols can strengthen the walls of blood vessels and reduce their permeability.
  4. Vitexin, which can expand the walls of blood vessels, improve the work of the myocardium and make the vessels themselves more elastic.

Siberian hawthorn is rightfully considered a record holder for the content of useful minerals and vitamins. Per 100 g of berry there is:

  1. 100% of the daily value of folic acid, which has a positive effect on hematemesis.
  2. 142% of the norm of beta-carotene, which accelerates cell regeneration.
  3. 52% of the daily norm of potassium, which has a positive effect on the heart muscle.
  4. 2146% of the daily norm of selenium, which prevents atherosclerosis.
  5. 40% of the norm of zinc, which is an antioxidant that can improve the condition of vascular walls.
  6. 22% of iron, which affects the level of hemoglobin and provides oxygen transport to cells.
  7. 40% of the norm of vitamin E, acting as an antioxidant that can improve the condition of vascular cells.
  8. 370% cobalt, which takes part in hematemesis.
  9. 25% magnesium, which strengthens the nervous system and relieves the effects of stress.

Hawthorn berries are enriched with flavonoids, which in themselves are antioxidants capable of blocking the destructive effects of free radicals on all cells in the human body. It has been scientifically proven that these elements in the composition of hawthorn berries have the following positive effects:

  1. Reduce the risk of hypertension.
  2. Interfere with the development of coronary heart disease.
  3. Reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

The use of hawthorn berries also helps to improve the work of the heart muscle and increase physical endurance.

There is a popular opinion that hawthorn is useful for the heart and blood vessels in any form. In ancient times, the juice was squeezed out of it, decoctions and teas were prepared.

All parts of this plant are useful for the human heart, however, berries bring the maximum benefit. This is ensured by the presence of elements such as hyperoside and vitexin. These are flavonoids that can accelerate the process of glucose oxidation and ensure the release of energy from carbohydrates. The result is an increase in the level of oxygen in the blood and vasodilation.

Useful properties of hawthorn for the heart

Both the medical and nutritional value of hawthorn seeds is due to the increased content of active but at the same time easily digestible substances.

Each of the hawthorn berries contains 3-5 seeds of a triangular shape. They do not sit very tightly in the pulp and can be easily removed when a fruit is fresh, but when it’s dry – it’s almost impossible to take out. Both - berries and seeds – have great therapeutic effect, whether hawthorn are fresh, frozen, or dried.

It is recommended to prepare teas, balms, drinks, and compotes based on extracts from solid natural raw materials (whole berries with seeds) since its useful components, contained in berries and seeds will stay with the liquid during processing. Hawthorn tea, drink, compotes are much tastier and healthier in comparison with those prepared from berries without seeds. For a basic compote from whole dried hawthorn berries, let dried berries to stay overnight in liquid, then bring it to boil, and now you can eat much softer berries with honey or as-is, and you have a ready to drink healthy hawthorn compote.

Hawthorn seeds are also used in Siberia for making flour, from which you can then bake cupcakes, buns, cakes, etc - pretty much like bird cherry flour, very popular in Siberia. There is also a method of using ground hawthorn seeds for the purposes of fortification (adding vitamins and useful nutrients) in wheat flour and baking mixes products in Siberia.

Hawthorn and rose hips are very similar in appearance, but at the same time, these plants are different in their nature and effect on humans. They differ in shape, size of leaves, flowers, fruits, and also have various medicinal properties.

Since the berries of these two plants are often confused, it makes sense to understand in more detail how to distinguish them from each other.

Rosehip and hawthorn berries are somewhat similar in appearance, but inside the rosehip, there is a fibrous seed capsule with several small seeds, while the hawthorn has soft fruits with one stone. The rosehip berry is covered with small stiff bristles, rough to the touch, and the surface of the hawthorn fruit is even and smooth.

Rosehip differs from hawthorn in appearance, small maximum height, and thinner needles on the branches. In terms of valuable properties, cultures have a lot in common. At the same time, the main difference between the wild rose is the increased content of vitamin C in the fruit.
